Built in 1872 by the Meiji governemnt, Tomioka Silk Mill was the first western factory built in Japan, and served as the model for future factories of its kind. The main building is a rare example of the combination of traditional Japanese and modern Western architecture, as you can see in the bricks used to support the wooden frames and traditional Japanese ceramic tiles for the roof.
